Building a Safe Eynesbury Patio
For many households in Eynesbury the priority is a patio that is safe and comfortable to use every day: grippy when wet, even underfoot and easy to keep tidy. That shapes how we build it as much as which slab you choose.
Evenness comes from the base. We excavate to a firm layer, compact the sub-base in stages and lay each slab on a full bed of mortar so there are no hollow spots. Small lips between slabs are a trip hazard, so we check each slab against its neighbours with a straight edge as we go.
The surface falls gently away from the house, below the damp proof course. Steps from the back door are built with consistent rises and a slab or tread that overhangs slightly so the edge is easy to see. Where a step is not wanted, a slot drain at the threshold can allow a very small step or a near level entry.
Ground conditions vary across the area, with some gardens on heavier soils and others closer to the river where the water table is higher. We check what we find on the day and adjust the depth of dig and sub-base accordingly, rather than using one fixed specification for every home.
Access is usually through a side passage on semi detached homes, or through the house on terraces. A typical patio here takes several working days, plus a short period afterwards before heavy furniture goes on.
Shape is worth a moment's thought as well. A patio that runs the full width of the house gives a wide, uncluttered space, while a deeper patio set to one side can catch more afternoon sun. We mark the outline on the ground first so you can stand on it and judge the size before anything is dug.
We also check for drains, inspection chambers and service pipes before digging. Covers can be raised or fitted with recessed trays so the paving runs over them neatly, keeping access available without leaving an obvious metal lid in the middle of the patio. The slabs in the tray are cut to match the pattern around them.

Signs You Need a New Patio
These are the situations that most often lead people to get in touch about this work, and what each one usually means.
Nowhere to Sit Outside
You have lawn or bare ground behind the house and want a solid, level space for outdoor dining, a barbecue or simply a couple of chairs in the sun.
An Old Patio Past Saving
Your existing slabs are cracked, loose or badly sunk, and the base underneath has given up, so lifting it and starting again is the sensible choice.
A New Extension or Doors
Bi-fold or French doors have gone in, and you want paving outside that lines up with the new threshold and gives you a step-free route out.
A Change of Style
The paving is sound but dated, and you would like a cleaner modern porcelain or a natural stone finish that better suits your home.

Grip, Joints & Stone Choice
Slip resistance varies a lot between slabs, so we bring samples you can try in your own garden, wet and dry.
- Limestone patio slabs: smooth and elegant, best in a honed or textured finish where they will get wet
- Indian sandstone patio paving: riven surface with natural grip, good for families, may need periodic cleaning
- Porcelain: choose an anti slip rated finish; low maintenance and stain resistant
- Slate: attractive and durable, but pick a textured face for shady spots
Joints affect both looks and upkeep. Traditional sand and cement pointing gives a firm, flush finish on natural stone. Resin based or polymer jointing compounds can be quicker to install, resist weeds well and suit narrow porcelain joints. Very open joints collect debris, so we keep widths consistent and sensible for the slab.
Colour is personal, but against the brick found on many Eynesbury homes, warm sandstone tones and pale grey limestone both sit comfortably. Darker slate can look smart next to modern doors and window frames.
The price of a new patio reflects area, ground preparation, the slab range and finish, the number of cuts and steps, and access. Anti slip and textured finishes can cost a little more, but they are often worth it on a patio used by children or older relatives.
When comparing patio layers, ask which slip rating the slab has, how joints will be filled and how they plan steps at the door. For more ideas on layout and features, see our patio paving ideas in Eynesbury.

How a New Patio Is Laid
Planning the Layout
We measure the space, agree the size and shape with you, check the levels at the house and help you choose the paving and jointing.
Digging Out
Turf, soil or old paving is removed to the required depth, and the ground is checked for soft spots, roots or services before the base goes in.
Base & Laying
A sub-base is laid and compacted, then each slab or block is bedded and tapped down to line and level, with a steady fall away from the walls.
Pointing & Review
Joints are pointed or filled, the area is swept and cleared, and we review the completed work with you and confirm everything has been done as agreed.
