Roots Under Eynesbury Drives
Eynesbury has many established gardens and roadside trees, and on some drives the roots have spread beneath the surface. Roots grow towards moisture and loose soil, and the layer just below a drive can offer both. Over the years they thicken and push upwards, and the surface above them starts to lift.
Root damage tends to look like this:
- A ridge or hump running across the drive away from a nearby tree
- Blocks tilted upwards along a line, sometimes with gaps between them
- Tarmac split along the line of a root, often with a raised edge
- Edging pushed out of line near a hedge or tree trunk
- Concrete cracked in a pattern that radiates from one point
Not every lump is a root. Settlement, old trenches and failed edging can look similar at first glance, so we check the pattern before deciding. A root problem usually follows a clear line from the tree and gets worse over the years, whereas settlement more often shows as a dip.
Raised surfaces are a trip hazard as well as an eyesore, especially on paths near the front door. They can also tip water into places it should not go, such as against a wall or into a garage.
Hedges cause similar trouble on a smaller scale. A long hedge beside a drive sends fine roots into the bedding sand along the edge, loosening blocks and making weeds harder to keep down.
Before any repair near a tree, it is worth checking whether the tree is protected. If you live in a conservation area or the tree has a preservation order, permission may be needed before any roots are cut. Huntingdonshire District Council can confirm whether that applies.

Signs Your Driveway Needs Repairing
These are the situations that most often lead people to get in touch about this work, and what each one usually means.
Sunken or Rocking Blocks
Block paving that dips in the wheel tracks or moves underfoot usually points to a soft patch in the base, often caused by water getting underneath.
Cracked or Potholed Tarmac
Cracks that open each winter and potholes by the gate or garage are a trip risk and let more water into the base below the surface.
Edging Has Come Loose
Kerbs or edge blocks that have tilted, cracked or pulled away leave the side of the drive unsupported, so the surface begins to spread and break up.
Puddles Near the House
Standing water by the front door or garage, or a channel drain that overflows, needs sorting before it damages the drive or the house walls.

Repairing Around a Tree
Our first aim is to fix the drive without harming the tree. We lift the surface over the root, expose it carefully and see how large it is. Small roots can often be cut cleanly without risk to the tree. Larger roots usually need to stay, so we adapt the repair around them.
Ways we can deal with a root include:
- Lowering the base slightly and relaying the surface over a protective layer
- Bridging over a large root with a reinforced section so it is not crushed
- Re-routing an edge or border to give the tree more space
- Switching a small area to a surface that copes better with movement
For block paving, relaying over a root is usually straightforward, and your own blocks can go back in place. For tarmac or resin, the damaged strip is cut out, the base rebuilt and the surface replaced, though the new section will look fresher than the old for a time.
It is important to be realistic. A large, healthy tree close to a drive may keep pushing upwards over the years, and no repair can stop that completely. We will tell you how long we would expect a repair to last in your situation.
If a tree has been taken down in recent years, the opposite problem can appear. As old roots rot away beneath the surface, they leave hollows, and the drive above can sink in patches over the following years. We look for signs of former trees as well as living ones.
The cost depends on the length of the damaged area, how carefully the root has to be worked around, any protection or bridging needed, and the surface type. If roots and other faults have damaged most of the drive, our page on planning a new drive in Eynesbury explains how a new layout can give a tree more room. How Driveway Repairs Work
Finding the Cause
We inspect the damage and the surrounding area, checking the falls, drains, edging and any nearby trees to understand why the drive has failed.
Opening Up the Area
Affected blocks are lifted and kept for reuse, or the damaged tarmac or resin is cut back to sound material so the repair has a firm edge.
Rebuilding the Base
Soft or washed-out material is dug out and replaced with compacted stone, and any drainage or edging faults are put right at the same time.
Resurfacing & Review
Blocks are relaid and jointed, or new material is laid and finished to the existing levels. We clear up, then review the completed work with you and confirm everything has been done as agreed.
