Laying a Large Patio in Walton
Gardens around Walton are often larger than those nearer the town centre, and many owners want a terrace that spans the back of the house. A bigger patio installation brings its own challenges: keeping a consistent fall over a wide area, handling large format slabs and planning where water goes.
We set out the patio with string lines and levels before any digging. Over a wide surface a small error in the fall becomes obvious, so we agree the finished height at the house, at each door and at the far edge before we start. The aim is a gentle slope away from the building that you barely notice when you walk on it.
Excavation and sub-base follow the ground. On clay we may dig deeper and use a membrane beneath the base to stop the stone mixing into the soil over time. The sub-base is compacted in layers, and every slab is set on a full mortar bed. With large porcelain slabs, which can be well over a metre long, a full bed and a primed back are the only way to avoid hollow spots.
Big patios need movement joints. Paving expands and contracts with temperature, and over a long run that movement has to go somewhere. We plan joints at sensible intervals and along the house wall so the surface does not crack or lift.
If your garden falls away, a raised patio with a dwarf wall can create a level terrace at door height and a step down to the lawn. For a level garden, a single surface at ground level is simplest. Most larger patios take a week or more depending on size, walls and steps.
Lighting and power are worth deciding early on a terrace this size. If you want low level lights in the paving or a socket at the far edge, the ducting can be laid under the sub-base by your electrician before the slabs go down, saving disruption later. The same applies to an outside tap near the far end of the terrace.

Signs You Need a New Patio
These are the situations that most often lead people to get in touch about this work, and what each one usually means.
Nowhere to Sit Outside
You have lawn or bare ground behind the house and want a solid, level space for outdoor dining, a barbecue or simply a couple of chairs in the sun.
An Old Patio Past Saving
Your existing slabs are cracked, loose or badly sunk, and the base underneath has given up, so lifting it and starting again is the sensible choice.
A New Extension or Doors
Bi-fold or French doors have gone in, and you want paving outside that lines up with the new threshold and gives you a step-free route out.
A Change of Style
The paving is sound but dated, and you would like a cleaner modern porcelain or a natural stone finish that better suits your home.

Slab Choices for a Big Terrace
Large areas show the character of a slab more than small ones, so it is worth seeing samples in your own light before deciding.
- Porcelain: uniform, low maintenance and well suited to large format sizes, but heavy and exacting to lay
- Indian sandstone patio slabs: varied and natural, forgiving of small level changes, need occasional cleaning
- Limestone patio paving: refined and even toned, good for formal layouts
- Slate: dark and elegant, can feel warm in full sun
Many Walton homes are built in buff or red brick with tiled roofs, and mid grey or warm beige paving generally ties the house and garden together. Very dark slabs can look striking but show dust and pollen more.
Joints on a large porcelain terrace are typically narrow and filled with a compound or polymer mortar for a clean line. Natural stone usually suits traditional pointing. Either way, the movement joints we plan are kept separate from the visible joints so they do not stand out.
Cost on a large patio is driven by area, the slab size and range, how much ground needs excavating, any walls or steps, and how far materials must travel through the garden. A patio cost per m2 can be more meaningful on a big open site, but cuts, levels and access still change it.
When choosing between patio layers for a project this size, ask how they handle large format slabs, where they will put movement joints and how they keep the fall consistent. For layout ideas such as zoning a dining area from a lounge area, see our Walton patio design page.

Planning the Layout
We measure the space, agree the size and shape with you, check the levels at the house and help you choose the paving and jointing.
Digging Out
Turf, soil or old paving is removed to the required depth, and the ground is checked for soft spots, roots or services before the base goes in.
Base & Laying
A sub-base is laid and compacted, then each slab or block is bedded and tapped down to line and level, with a steady fall away from the walls.
