Patios Beside Older Eaton Socon Homes
Eaton Socon has a mix of older cottages, period houses and later homes, and many gardens sit alongside mature boundaries or old brick walls. A new patio here often needs to look as though it belongs, rather than standing out as obviously new.
The construction is the same careful process wherever we work: dig out to a firm level, lay a compacted sub-base and set each slab on a full mortar bed. Around older properties we take extra care near walls, keeping the paving slightly back from their bases and avoiding any disturbance to old footings.
Damp proof courses on older houses can be low or, in some cases, absent. We keep the finished surface well below any damp proof course and fall it away from the house. Where an older property has no clear damp course, we keep the patio lower still and may suggest a gravel strip against the wall so rain can soak away rather than splash back onto the brickwork.
Garden levels often vary in older plots, and a small step or a short low wall can create a level seating area without heavy excavation. Where the garden rises, a gently sunken area can be formed, but only with drainage planned at its lowest point.
Access in older streets can be through narrow passages or the house itself. Laying irregular natural stone takes longer than uniform porcelain, so most projects here run to several working days or more.
Reclaimed materials sometimes come up in conversation. If you already have old bricks or flags on site, we can look at whether they are sound enough to edge the new patio or form a step, which helps the new work tie in with what was there before.
Trees deserve attention in established gardens. We avoid cutting through large roots close to a trunk and may adjust the outline or build up rather than dig down in that area. If a tree might be protected, it is sensible to check with the council before work starts.
We also leave the joint against any old wall slightly open or gravel filled, which lets the brickwork breathe.

Signs You Need a New Patio
These are the situations that most often lead people to get in touch about this work, and what each one usually means.
Nowhere to Sit Outside
You have lawn or bare ground behind the house and want a solid, level space for outdoor dining, a barbecue or simply a couple of chairs in the sun.
An Old Patio Past Saving
Your existing slabs are cracked, loose or badly sunk, and the base underneath has given up, so lifting it and starting again is the sensible choice.
A New Extension or Doors
Bi-fold or French doors have gone in, and you want paving outside that lines up with the new threshold and gives you a step-free route out.
A Change of Style
The paving is sound but dated, and you would like a cleaner modern porcelain or a natural stone finish that better suits your home.

Natural Stone for Period Character
For a patio next to older brick, Indian sandstone and other natural stone patio options are often the first choice. Their varied colour and riven texture look settled straight away, especially in warm buff or grey tones.
Limestone offers a smoother, more refined finish that suits formal gardens. Slate is darker and more contemporary but can still work beside period homes when used carefully. Porcelain patio slabs are now available in convincing stone effects for people who want the look with lower upkeep; they must be primed and fully bedded.
Laying pattern makes a difference. A random mix of slab sizes looks traditional and informal, while a coursed pattern gives a tidier, more modern appearance. We lay out a dry run before mortaring so you can see the effect in place.
Part of the village falls within a conservation area. A ground level back garden patio usually needs no permission, but it is worth checking with Huntingdonshire District Council if your work is visible from the street or near a listed building.
Cost depends on the area, the stone, the pattern, the number of cuts around walls and features, and access. Natural stone laid in a random pattern takes more time than a uniform porcelain grid, which is reflected in the quote.
When comparing patio installers, ask whether they have laid irregular natural stone before and how they will protect older walls and footings. To see layout ideas, have a look at our Eaton Socon patio paving page.

How a New Patio Is Laid
Planning the Layout
We measure the space, agree the size and shape with you, check the levels at the house and help you choose the paving and jointing.
Digging Out
Turf, soil or old paving is removed to the required depth, and the ground is checked for soft spots, roots or services before the base goes in.
Base & Laying
A sub-base is laid and compacted, then each slab or block is bedded and tapped down to line and level, with a steady fall away from the walls.
Pointing & Review
Joints are pointed or filled, the area is swept and cleared, and we review the completed work with you and confirm everything has been done as agreed.
