Older Surfaces, Many Repairs
Eaton Socon has a mix of older village properties and later housing, and many drives here have been patched more than once. It is common to find a drive that is part original tarmac, part later patching and part block paving added for an extension. Each join between those surfaces is a place where water gets in and damage begins.
On these drives, we most often see:
- Potholes forming where an old patch has come away
- Crumbling edges where tarmac meets a grass verge or flower bed
- Cracks running along the joins between different surfaces
- Raised or sunken areas around old service covers
- Loose chippings and a worn, grey surface that lets water through
Tarmac ages by drying out. As the binder in the surface oxidises, it becomes brittle and starts to lose its stones, and the surface becomes more porous. Water then soaks into the base and, in a cold snap, freezes and breaks the surface from beneath. That is how a small crack turns into a pothole over a single winter.
Joins are another weak point. Where a later patch meets older tarmac, or tarmac meets block paving, the bond is rarely perfect. Water finds its way down the join, softens the ground and starts to undermine both surfaces.
Many older plots also have walls, gate piers or outbuildings close to the drive. Where tarmac has been laid tight against old brickwork, water can collect at the foot of the wall and soak into it, and the edge of the drive tends to break up there first.
Some parts of Eaton Socon fall within a conservation area. Repairs that change the look of a frontage may need more thought there, though most like-for-like repairs do not.

Signs Your Driveway Needs Repairing
These are the situations that most often lead people to get in touch about this work, and what each one usually means.
Sunken or Rocking Blocks
Block paving that dips in the wheel tracks or moves underfoot usually points to a soft patch in the base, often caused by water getting underneath.
Cracked or Potholed Tarmac
Cracks that open each winter and potholes by the gate or garage are a trip risk and let more water into the base below the surface.
Edging Has Come Loose
Kerbs or edge blocks that have tilted, cracked or pulled away leave the side of the drive unsupported, so the surface begins to spread and break up.
Puddles Near the House
Standing water by the front door or garage, or a channel drain that overflows, needs sorting before it damages the drive or the house walls.

Patch or Resurface in Eaton Socon
Tarmac driveway repair can mean anything from filling a single pothole to laying a new surface over the whole drive. We help you decide which makes sense by looking at how much of the drive is affected and how sound the base is underneath.
Patching works well when:
- The damage is limited to one or two areas
- The rest of the surface is still firm and holding its stones
- The base beneath the damage is sound once the top is cut back
Resurfacing is usually the better option when potholes and cracks are scattered across the drive, or when the surface has turned grey and porous throughout. In that case, a new wearing course laid over a repaired base gives a single, consistent finish and avoids a patchwork of joins.
Each patch is cut back to a clean square edge, the base is repaired, fresh hot tarmac is laid and compacted, and the joins are sealed to keep water out. Where tarmac meets block paving or a verge, we can add a proper edge restraint so the surface has something firm to hold against.
Concrete drives laid in panels decades ago turn up here too. Concrete driveway repair usually means cutting out the cracked panel along clean lines and casting a new one, rather than filling a wide crack that will simply open again.
On drives that have been patched many times, we often suggest tidying the old repairs into one or two larger, neater areas, so there are fewer joins left for water to find.
The cost depends on the number of areas to repair, the depth of any base failure, edging work needed and whether a full resurface is more sensible. How Driveway Repairs Work
Finding the Cause
We inspect the damage and the surrounding area, checking the falls, drains, edging and any nearby trees to understand why the drive has failed.
Opening Up the Area
Affected blocks are lifted and kept for reuse, or the damaged tarmac or resin is cut back to sound material so the repair has a firm edge.
Rebuilding the Base
Soft or washed-out material is dug out and replaced with compacted stone, and any drainage or edging faults are put right at the same time.
Resurfacing & Review
Blocks are relaid and jointed, or new material is laid and finished to the existing levels. We clear up, then review the completed work with you and confirm everything has been done as agreed.
