Traditional Paving for Eaton Socon
Eaton Socon has an older heart around its village green, with period houses, cottages and long established gardens, and newer roads of family homes around it. For the older properties in particular, the material you choose for a drive has a strong effect on how the house looks from the street. Block paving offers a range of finishes that can respect that character better than a flat, uniform surface.
One choice worth knowing about is clay pavers. Unlike concrete blocks, which take their colour from added pigment, clay pavers are fired like bricks and keep their colour through the body of the block. They tend to weather gracefully and suit red brick homes well. Concrete blocks are more widely available and come in many textures, including tumbled and tegula styles that imitate older surfaces. We can bring examples of both so you can compare.
A sound base for any finish. Whatever the block, the work underneath follows the same principles. We dig out to a depth that suits the ground and the traffic, lay and compact a crushed stone sub-base, screed a sand bed and lay the blocks to falls. Kerbs or edge blocks set in concrete then hold everything in place.
Older plots often have mature trees, old walls and uneven levels. We take care around roots and wall foundations and adjust the layout to avoid undermining them. Where a tree is protected, we may need to agree a careful method before digging nearby.
Eaton Socon is in Huntingdonshire, so planning questions go to Huntingdonshire District Council. Homes around the green fall within a conservation area, and changes to frontages there can be controlled more tightly than elsewhere. If your home may be affected, check with the council before choosing a design. Elsewhere, the usual rule applies: permeable block paving or drainage into the garden normally avoids the need for permission.

When Block Paving Is the Right Choice
These are the situations that most often lead people to get in touch about this work, and what each one usually means.
A Classic, Smart Finish
Homeowners who want a traditional look with crisp borders and a defined pattern often choose block paving to suit the style of the house.
Old Tarmac or Concrete
A cracked concrete slab or a worn tarmac drive is a common reason to switch to block paving, which gives a far more finished appearance.
Room for Another Car
Widening a drive to park a second or third car is a common reason to relay it, and block paving can be shaped to fit the space you have.
Access to Services Below
Where drains or cables run under the driveway, block paving makes sense because sections can be lifted and put back without obvious patches.

Weighing Up Blocks Against Other Surfaces
Many Eaton Socon homeowners compare block paving with tarmac, gravel and resin before deciding. Each has a place. Block paving gives the widest choice of colour, pattern and texture, can be repaired in small sections, and suits traditional settings when the right block is chosen. Tarmac can cost less on large, simple areas, but offers little in the way of character. Gravel is attractive and drains well but needs raking and edging to keep it in place.
For a period house, consider tumbled blocks in a red or brindle blend, or clay pavers laid in herringbone or stretcher bond. On newer homes, a clean grey or charcoal block can work, with a border that picks up the window frames or front door.
Patterns follow use. Herringbone is the strongest for parking, stretcher bond suits paths and narrow runs, and basketweave can make a small courtyard or area by the door feel more intimate.
Your quote will depend on:
- Clay pavers or concrete blocks, and which range
- Working around trees, walls and uneven levels
- The amount of old surface and soil to remove
- Any steps, edging details or drainage
- Access to the site, especially on narrow lanes
Clay pavers generally need little more than sweeping and an occasional wash. Concrete blocks benefit from the same care, with top ups of joint sand when needed. Sealing is optional and can help resist stains on lighter blocks.
Reclaimed bricks and setts are sometimes suggested for period homes. They can look wonderful, but they vary in size and strength and are not always suitable for driving on. If you have a supply in mind, we can look at it at the visit and tell you honestly whether it would stand up to a car, or whether it is better kept for a path or edging where the load is lighter.

How Block Paving Is Laid
Picking Blocks & Pattern
We measure the area, check the levels and fall, and help you choose block colour, size and laying pattern, including any border or feature detail.
Dig Out & Sub-Base
The existing surface is removed, the ground excavated, and a layer of aggregate is spread and compacted to form a stable foundation for the blocks.
Edging & Block Laying
Edge restraints are set in place, a screeded sand bed is prepared, and the blocks are laid to pattern with neat cuts around every edge and cover.
Jointing & Sign-Off
Kiln dried sand is brushed into the joints and the surface compacted. After clearing up, we review the completed work with you and confirm it is as agreed.
