Village Lanes & Newer Estates
Wavendon has two quite different kinds of drive. Around the older village there are longer gravel and tarmac approaches, some running down lanes or shared accesses. On the newer developments, drives are shorter and usually block paved or tarmac, laid by the builder only a few years ago. The faults on each are different, so the repair is too.
On the older village drives, we often find:
- Gravel that has worn thin, leaving the stony base or bare earth showing
- Potholes that fill with water and grow after each frost
- Tarmac edges crumbling where the drive meets a soft verge
- Tree roots lifting the surface on drives beneath mature hedges
On newer homes, the problems are usually about settlement:
- Blocks sinking along a trench line where services were laid
- Dips near the garage or front door where the ground was made up
- Joints opening up as the base beneath continues to settle
New developments often involve a lot of earth being moved and built back up. Where that fill was not fully consolidated, it can carry on settling for some years after the homes are occupied, and the drive follows it down. If your home is still within a builder warranty period, it is worth checking what that covers before arranging any work, as drives are often excluded but sometimes are not.
Older gravel and tarmac lanes suffer more from water and frost. A small hollow fills, freezes, breaks up and becomes a pothole, and each winter makes it larger.
Where a lane drive meets the road, the first few metres take the most punishment from turning vehicles and delivery lorries. That stretch often breaks up years before the rest, so a short, well built repair there can extend the life of the whole approach.

Signs Your Driveway Needs Repairing
These are the situations that most often lead people to get in touch about this work, and what each one usually means.
Sunken or Rocking Blocks
Block paving that dips in the wheel tracks or moves underfoot usually points to a soft patch in the base, often caused by water getting underneath.
Cracked or Potholed Tarmac
Cracks that open each winter and potholes by the gate or garage are a trip risk and let more water into the base below the surface.
Edging Has Come Loose
Kerbs or edge blocks that have tilted, cracked or pulled away leave the side of the drive unsupported, so the surface begins to spread and break up.
Puddles Near the House
Standing water by the front door or garage, or a channel drain that overflows, needs sorting before it damages the drive or the house walls.

Repairing Old & New Surfaces
For worn gravel, a gravel driveway repair usually means scraping back the loose stone, reshaping and compacting the base where it has rutted, filling any hollows with suitable material and laying fresh gravel to the right depth. On slopes or turning areas, a stabilising grid can stop the same ruts reforming.
Pothole repairs on tarmac lanes and drives work best when each hole is cut out to a square edge, cleaned, given a firm base and filled with hot material that is rolled and sealed at the joins. Filling holes with loose cold mix may tide a drive over, but it rarely lasts more than a season or two.
On newer block paved drives, we lift the sunken area, investigate why it has dropped, rebuild the sub-base with properly compacted stone and relay your own blocks. Because the blocks are fairly new, they usually match well, though any replacements will look cleaner at first.
Shared lanes need a little planning. A load of stone or tarmac needs somewhere to be unloaded, and a small machine may have to pass along the lane. We agree the route and timings at the visit so neighbours are not left without access for longer than necessary.
On gravel, the edges matter as much as the stone. Where gravel spills into verges or beds, a timber or steel edge, or a row of setts, will hold it in place. That simple step usually reduces how often the drive needs topping up and stops the base being exposed so quickly.
The cost depends on how far the problem has spread, whether a lane or shared access is involved, the volume of material to bring in, and any drainage changes needed to stop water returning to the same spot.
If the surface has broken up along most of its length, a fresh start may make more sense than repeated patching. Our page on replacing a Wavendon driveway sets out what that would involve. Either way, we visit, explain what we see and provide a free written quote.

How Driveway Repairs Work
Finding the Cause
We inspect the damage and the surrounding area, checking the falls, drains, edging and any nearby trees to understand why the drive has failed.
Opening Up the Area
Affected blocks are lifted and kept for reuse, or the damaged tarmac or resin is cut back to sound material so the repair has a firm edge.
Rebuilding the Base
Soft or washed-out material is dug out and replaced with compacted stone, and any drainage or edging faults are put right at the same time.
Resurfacing & Review
Blocks are relaid and jointed, or new material is laid and finished to the existing levels. We clear up, then review the completed work with you and confirm everything has been done as agreed.
