Extending a Wavendon Drive

A common request around Wavendon is a bigger drive. Many of the newer homes came with parking for one or two cars, and growing families soon need space for another vehicle without blocking the road. Extending into the front lawn with block paving is a neat way to do it, and it can be blended with an existing drive or replace it altogether.

The first question is what the developer laid. Some new-build drives have a thin surface over a limited base, which can be fine for light use but may not suit extra weight once it is extended. We look at what is already there, and where it makes sense we take the whole area back and build one consistent sub-base so the old and new parts behave the same way over time.

Planning for the extra water. Turning lawn into parking removes ground that used to soak up rain. If the new hard area drains onto the road and is over five square metres, planning permission is normally needed from Milton Keynes City Council. Choosing permeable block paving, where water passes through wider joints into an open stone base, or falling the drive towards a border, usually avoids that. On some newer estates there can also be restrictions in the title deeds, so it is worth checking those too.

Edging needs particular thought when a drive is extended. The point where new blocks meet old ones, or where the drive meets a footpath that belongs to the estate, must be held firmly so it does not open up. We set new edging in concrete and make sure the join between areas is supported underneath.

In the older part of the village, cottages and long established homes have very different frontages, often with walls, hedges and uneven levels. There, block paving is more about fitting in than gaining space, and we adjust the layout to suit.

When to Call Us

When Block Paving Is the Right Choice

These are the situations that most often lead people to get in touch about this work, and what each one usually means.

  • A Classic, Smart Finish

Homeowners who want a traditional look with crisp borders and a defined pattern often choose block paving to suit the style of the house.

  • Old Tarmac or Concrete

A cracked concrete slab or a worn tarmac drive is a common reason to switch to block paving, which gives a far more finished appearance.

  • Room for Another Car

Widening a drive to park a second or third car is a common reason to relay it, and block paving can be shaped to fit the space you have.

  • Access to Services Below

Where drains or cables run under the driveway, block paving makes sense because sections can be lifted and put back without obvious patches.

Choosing Blocks for New & Old Homes

On newer houses with buff or red facing brick and grey roofs, a brindle or autumn blend tends to tie the drive to the house, and a charcoal border gives a sharp edge against the lawn. If you are extending rather than replacing, we look for a block that complements the original rather than an imperfect match, as a near miss can look worse than a clear contrast.

Village properties often suit tumbled or tegula blocks in warm, muted shades, which look settled from day one. Laid in a random or stretcher pattern, they avoid the very regular look of a modern estate drive.

Pattern guidance stays the same for both: herringbone where cars turn, stretcher bond for straight runs, and basketweave for paths and small feature areas.

What affects the price of an extension or replacement:

  • Whether the existing drive is kept, lifted or replaced
  • Removing turf and topsoil from the lawn area
  • Depth of new sub-base needed
  • Permeable construction, which uses a different base
  • New edging, borders and any steps

For upkeep, sweep regularly and refill joints with kiln-dried sand where they drop, but note that permeable block paving uses a fine grit in the joints instead of sand, so it should be topped up with the right material. Avoid washing the joints out with very high pressure. Weeds are easier to stop than remove, and a full joint is your best defence.

Timing is worth a thought on a newer home. Settling of fresh ground around a recently built house can continue for a while, so if your drive was laid only a short time ago and has already moved, tell us at the visit. It helps us judge how much of the base needs rebuilding and whether the edges were properly restrained in the first place.

How It Works

How Block Paving Is Laid

  1. Picking Blocks & Pattern

We measure the area, check the levels and fall, and help you choose block colour, size and laying pattern, including any border or feature detail.

  2. Dig Out & Sub-Base

The existing surface is removed, the ground excavated, and a layer of aggregate is spread and compacted to form a stable foundation for the blocks.

  3. Edging & Block Laying

Edge restraints are set in place, a screeded sand bed is prepared, and the blocks are laid to pattern with neat cuts around every edge and cover.

  4. Jointing & Sign-Off

Kiln dried sand is brushed into the joints and the surface compacted. After clearing up, we review the completed work with you and confirm it is as agreed.

FAQs

Block Paving FAQs for Wavendon

Do you cover Wavendon?

Yes. Wavendon in Buckinghamshire is one of the areas we cover from our base in Bedford, along with nearby Kents Hill, Walton and Fenny Stratford. Call 01525 771128 with your postcode and we will arrange a time to look at the job.

Can you extend my drive without replacing the existing part?

Sometimes, if the existing drive is sound and a suitable block is available. Where the original base is thin or the blocks are hard to complement, replacing the whole area often gives a better long term result. We explain both options at the visit.

How do I know if my estate has rules about front gardens?

Some newer estates have covenants in the title deeds about front gardens or parking. Your conveyancing documents or the estate management company can confirm this, and it is worth checking before work starts.

Is permeable block paving more work to maintain?

It needs similar care, with regular sweeping to keep the joints clear so water keeps passing through. The joints use a fine grit rather than sand, and we will tell you which material to use for top ups.

Will removing my lawn leave mud on the road?

We keep spoil on site in bags or skips and clean up as we go. Where needed we use boards to protect verges and paths during deliveries.
