When Estate Block Paving Settles
Kents Hill homes went up from the late 1980s onwards, and most were handed over with block paved drives laid by the developer. Many of those drives have now carried cars for decades, and the same pattern of wear shows up again and again across the estate.
The faults we see most on Kents Hill drives are:
- Two parallel dips where the car wheels sit each night
- A hollow near the garage door where water runs off the roof
- Blocks rocking or rising where a tree root has spread beneath them
- Spreading at the open edge where the drive meets the lawn
- A soft patch around an inspection chamber cover
Wheel ruts are almost always a base problem. Developer drives were often laid on a fairly thin layer of compacted stone, which is fine for the first few years but gradually deforms under daily loads. The blocks themselves are usually still in good order, which is good news for the repair.
Open plan frontages bring their own issue. Where there is no kerb between the drive and the lawn, the outer row of blocks has nothing firm to push against. Over time it creeps into the grass, the joints open and the drive starts to unravel from the edge inwards.
Inspection covers are a frequent weak spot too. The ground immediately around a chamber is often less well compacted than the rest, so the blocks nearby can sink, leaving the cover standing proud as a trip hazard.
Shared turning heads and closes are common on the estate. While blocks are up, we keep neighbours' access clear by working in one section at a time wherever a drive opens straight onto a shared area.

Signs Your Driveway Needs Repairing
These are the situations that most often lead people to get in touch about this work, and what each one usually means.
Sunken or Rocking Blocks
Block paving that dips in the wheel tracks or moves underfoot usually points to a soft patch in the base, often caused by water getting underneath.
Cracked or Potholed Tarmac
Cracks that open each winter and potholes by the gate or garage are a trip risk and let more water into the base below the surface.
Edging Has Come Loose
Kerbs or edge blocks that have tilted, cracked or pulled away leave the side of the drive unsupported, so the surface begins to spread and break up.
Puddles Near the House
Standing water by the front door or garage, or a channel drain that overflows, needs sorting before it damages the drive or the house walls.

Relaying Rather Than Replacing
Because the original blocks on Kents Hill are usually still sound, block paving driveway repairs here focus on what is underneath. We lift the blocks from the sunken area, stack them carefully, dig out the failed bed and sub-base, then rebuild it with properly compacted stone before relaying the same blocks.
Using your own blocks has two advantages. It saves the cost of new material, and it keeps the colour consistent across the drive. Blocks that have been in place for decades have faded evenly, and new ones of the same type can stand out for a year or two before they mellow.
Where the open edge has spread, we fit a proper restraint along the lawn side, bedded so it cannot move. Around inspection covers, we can reset the frame to the correct level and rebuild the surrounding base so the blocks sit flush again.
To judge whether a repair will last, we check:
- How firm the ground is around the sunken area
- Whether the dips follow a pattern that points to one cause
- How much of the drive is affected compared with how much is sound
- Whether surface water is reaching the base and softening it
Timing matters too. A dip relaid in spring has the summer to bed in under daily use, so any small adjustment can be made before the wet months. Leaving a rut to deepen through a rainy season tends to soften more of the base around it, which widens the area that eventually has to be lifted.
The cost depends mostly on the area to be lifted and how deep the base has failed, plus any edging, cover resetting or drainage work. If ruts and spreading have reached most of the drive, relaying the whole lot may be the better value, and our page on renewing a Kents Hill driveway explains that route. How Driveway Repairs Work
Finding the Cause
We inspect the damage and the surrounding area, checking the falls, drains, edging and any nearby trees to understand why the drive has failed.
Opening Up the Area
Affected blocks are lifted and kept for reuse, or the damaged tarmac or resin is cut back to sound material so the repair has a firm edge.
Rebuilding the Base
Soft or washed-out material is dug out and replaced with compacted stone, and any drainage or edging faults are put right at the same time.
Resurfacing & Review
Blocks are relaid and jointed, or new material is laid and finished to the existing levels. We clear up, then review the completed work with you and confirm everything has been done as agreed.
