Small Drives, Specific Faults
Many Fenny Stratford homes have short frontages that run almost straight onto the pavement. On a drive that compact, there is very little margin. A single loose kerb or a few blocks that have crept sideways can make the whole frontage look neglected, and can become a trip hazard where it meets the public footway.
On these smaller plots, the problems we tend to find are:
- Edging that has worked loose, letting the blocks beside it spread outwards
- Joints that have opened up so blocks rattle when a car drives over them
- A dip near the pavement where a utility trench was once dug and badly filled
- Water collecting against the house because the fall runs the wrong way
- Cracks in old tarmac along the line of the front wall
The edge is often where trouble starts. Block paving relies on a firm restraint all the way round. Once one section of edging moves, the blocks behind it lose their grip on each other, the joints open, and the drive begins to drift. Catching that early is far cheaper than letting it spread across the frontage.
Low ground near the canal and the river can also play a part. On parts of Fenny Stratford the ground can stay damp for long spells, and a base that holds water loses strength. Where puddles sit against a wall or doorstep, we check whether the levels can be corrected during the repair.
Old service trenches are another common cause. If a pipe or cable was laid across the front some years ago and the trench was backfilled loosely, the surface above it will sink in a neat line. The cure is to dig out and compact that strip properly before relaying.
Older terraced streets here sometimes have a narrow strip of tarmac or concrete laid decades ago by a previous owner, often thinner than a modern drive would be. Once a heavier modern car starts using it every day, that thin layer cracks quickly. We check the thickness at the edge before deciding whether the strip can simply be patched or needs a deeper base.

Signs Your Driveway Needs Repairing
These are the situations that most often lead people to get in touch about this work, and what each one usually means.
Sunken or Rocking Blocks
Block paving that dips in the wheel tracks or moves underfoot usually points to a soft patch in the base, often caused by water getting underneath.
Cracked or Potholed Tarmac
Cracks that open each winter and potholes by the gate or garage are a trip risk and let more water into the base below the surface.
Edging Has Come Loose
Kerbs or edge blocks that have tilted, cracked or pulled away leave the side of the drive unsupported, so the surface begins to spread and break up.
Puddles Near the House
Standing water by the front door or garage, or a channel drain that overflows, needs sorting before it damages the drive or the house walls.

Putting a Tight Frontage Right
On a small drive, we want the repair to blend in, not stand out. Lifting and relaying your own blocks keeps the colour and pattern consistent, and new edging can be bedded in concrete so it holds firm against the pavement for years.
A typical block paving driveway repair here means lifting the blocks beside the failed edge, rebuilding the bed beneath them, setting a new restraint and relaying the same blocks before brushing in fresh jointing sand. Where blocks are cracked, we look for close matches, though a handful of new ones may look brighter for a while until they weather.
For tarmac, driveway crack repair depends on why the crack appeared. A hairline crack in a sound surface can be sealed. A crack that follows a sinking trench or a failing edge will return unless the ground below it is put right first, so we would cut out and reinstate that strip.
The cost of a repair on a frontage this size depends on:
- How far the movement has spread from the original fault
- Whether the edging needs replacing along one side or all of them
- How much of the base must be dug out and rebuilt
- Access, parking for our van and space for a small skip
- Any change to levels needed to move water away from the house
If the whole frontage has broken up, patching it piece by piece will not give a good result. In that case, our guide to building a new drive in Fenny Stratford covers what a rebuild on a small plot involves. Either way, we visit, explain what we found and give you a free written quote.

How Driveway Repairs Work
Finding the Cause
We inspect the damage and the surrounding area, checking the falls, drains, edging and any nearby trees to understand why the drive has failed.
Opening Up the Area
Affected blocks are lifted and kept for reuse, or the damaged tarmac or resin is cut back to sound material so the repair has a firm edge.
Rebuilding the Base
Soft or washed-out material is dug out and replaced with compacted stone, and any drainage or edging faults are put right at the same time.
Resurfacing & Review
Blocks are relaid and jointed, or new material is laid and finished to the existing levels. We clear up, then review the completed work with you and confirm everything has been done as agreed.
