Long Drives & Lane Entrances
Wavendon has two quite different kinds of driveway. In and around the old village, some properties have long private drives running off narrow lanes, often finished in worn gravel or patched tarmac. On the newer developments, drives are shorter and sit in front of modern family homes.
Long private drives are where tarmac really earns its place. It covers distance cost effectively, gives a firm surface for deliveries and visitors, and avoids the constant raking and topping up that a gravel drive needs. We often see older drives here that have been patched many times, and in those cases resurfacing over the sound parts and rebuilding the failed sections can be a good approach.
On a long run the base needs care. Soft spots, old tree roots and areas where water collects show up as dips and cracks. We dig these out and rebuild them in compacted stone before laying the binder and surface courses, so the whole length rides evenly.
Rural drainage is different too. Water from a long drive may run towards a ditch, a hedge line or a lane rather than a street gully. We plan cross falls and, where needed, add channels or soakaways so the surface does not shed water onto the lane or leave puddles at the gate.
The entrance where a drive meets the lane is usually the most worn section, as vehicles brake, turn and pull away there. We build that bellmouth area strongly and set firm edges so it holds its shape.
Wavendon falls under Milton Keynes City Council. Any work at the boundary with a public road or verge may need highways approval as well, and some newer estates have deed covenants on front gardens. Ask the council about planning for your property, as the five square metre drainage rule still applies to front surfaces.

When a Tarmac Driveway Makes Sense
These are the situations that most often lead people to get in touch about this work, and what each one usually means.
Old Concrete Has Cracked
A tired concrete or broken slab drive with wide cracks and trip edges can be dug out and replaced with a single, even tarmac surface.
Room for More Cars
Turning lawn or a front garden into extra parking is a common reason to call, and tarmac covers a large area at a sensible cost per square metre.
Gravel Keeps Migrating
Loose stones that end up on the pavement, in the house or in the lawn are a frequent frustration, and a bound tarmac surface stays where it is laid.
Water Pools After Rain
Puddles that sit on a drive for hours usually mean the falls were never set correctly, which a new surface with planned levels can put right.

Getting the Finish Right in Wavendon
On a country drive, a black tarmac surface with a simple granite or block edge looks tidy without being too formal. Some owners prefer a more rural look and choose a tarmac and chip finish, where decorative stone chippings are rolled into the hot surface. It gives a gravel appearance with a bound surface underneath, though loose chips can appear in the early months.
On estate homes, a smooth black or red tarmac drive with a block border tends to sit well against modern brickwork.
Things that affect the cost of a Wavendon drive:
- The length and width of the drive and how much needs full reconstruction
- Lorry access along narrow lanes
- Drainage to ditches, soakaways or channels
- Edging, entrance work and any decorative finish
Hot-laid tarmac is used for the whole surface, with cold lay kept only for small temporary repairs. Tarmac takes some time to harden fully, so on a long drive we plan the work so you have a way in and out at sensible times.
Maintenance on a rural drive mainly involves keeping hedge clippings and leaves off the surface and trimming back vegetation at the edges, which can otherwise creep in and lift the margins. Moss in shaded sections under trees responds well to brushing and an occasional treatment.
Overhanging trees along a lane entrance drop sap, seed and twigs onto the surface. None of this harms tarmac, but cutting back low branches keeps the drive cleaner and lets it dry out faster after rain.
Compared with gravel, tarmac stops stones being carried onto the lane and is easier to clear of snow and leaves. Block paving or resin can suit the area near the house, and we can combine surfaces if you want a different finish by the front door.

How a Tarmac Driveway Is Laid
Survey & Levels
We measure the drive, check how water currently runs off, note any covers or services, and agree where the finished surface should sit against the house.
Dig Out & Sub-Base
The existing surface is broken out and removed, then a stone sub-base is spread in layers and compacted so the drive has a firm, stable foundation.
Edging & Drainage
Edging is set on a concrete haunch to hold the tarmac in place, and any channel drains or soakaway connections the layout needs are installed.
Lay, Roll & Review
Tarmac is laid hot and rolled to the agreed falls. We clear the site, then review the completed work with you and confirm everything has been done as agreed.
