Reviving Original Estate Block Paving

A lot of Kents Hill drives were laid when the houses were built, and many are still the original block paving. After decades of weather and parked cars, those blocks usually look darker and flatter than they did, with black spots of lichen, a green tinge at the shady side and joints that have lost most of their sand.

That last point matters more than it looks. Once the joints empty, weeds and moss take hold in the gaps and the blocks can start to move slightly against each other. A good clean followed by re-sanding often does more for an older estate drive than people expect, and it costs far less than relaying.

Block paving cleaning is about balance. Too little pressure leaves the grime in the surface texture. Too much strips out what joint sand remains and can roughen the face of the blocks. We use a setting suited to the age and condition of the paving, often with a rotary cleaner that keeps the results even and avoids the striped look a hand lance can leave.

Lichen deserves a separate mention. The small pale or black circles you see on older paving are tough and rarely come away with water alone. A suitable treatment applied after washing breaks them down over the following weeks, and we explain that some marks fade gradually rather than disappearing on the day.

If the drive has been widened at some point with a newer section of block, or resin or tarmac has been added beside it, each part gets the method that suits it. Resin is cleaned gently so the stones stay bound, and tarmac is not blasted at close range.

Wash water and loosened grit are swept up rather than left in the road gully. Drains on the estate lead on towards local watercourses, so we keep products to what the job needs.

Many Kents Hill closes have open frontages with no wall between neighbours, so a clean on one drive can easily splash the next. We keep the spray low along shared edges and rinse any overspray off a neighbour's paving before we pack up, which saves an awkward conversation later.

Signs Your Driveway Needs Cleaning

These are the situations that most often lead people to get in touch about this work, and what each one usually means.

  • Green, Slippery Surface

Algae and moss spread quickly on shaded drives and north-facing paving, leaving a slick surface that can be a hazard on wet mornings.

  • Weeds in Every Joint

Grass and weeds growing between blocks and along the edges make a drive look neglected and, left alone, can start to loosen the paving.

  • Selling or Letting a Home

A clean drive is one of the first things buyers and tenants notice, so many people book a clean before photos are taken or viewings start.

  • Colour Has Faded to Grey

Block paving and resin can look dull and patchy under a film of grime, and a deep clean often shows the original colour is still there.

Re-Sanding & Sealing on the Estate

After the clean, kiln-dried sand is brushed into the joints until they are full again. This is the step that makes the biggest difference on an older Kents Hill drive, because it locks the blocks together and leaves weeds less room.

Driveway sealing is often asked about at this point. A sealer can deepen the colour of faded blocks, help keep the joint sand in place and make oil less likely to soak in. It is not essential, and on paving that is uneven or sinking it is not a good use of money. Some homeowners also prefer the natural look of unsealed blocks.

Once refreshed, many estate drives only need a professional clean every couple of years, with a moss and weed treatment in between where the drive is shaded.

The driveway cleaning cost here mostly comes down to:

  • The area of block paving and any extra sections
  • How much lichen and moss needs treating
  • Whether the joints need a full re-sand
  • Whether you choose to seal

Cleaning sometimes shows that an original drive has dipped where cars stand, or that the edge restraint has started to give way. Those faults are better fixed before any sealer goes on, and you can find out more on our Kents Hill driveway repairs page.

Professional driveway cleaning is a good way to judge whether the old paving still has years left in it. We will tell you honestly what we see once it is clean.

How It Works

How Driveway Cleaning Works

  1. Checking the Surface

We look at what the drive is made of, its condition, any loose blocks or damage, and agree which areas are included before any cleaning starts.

  2. Weeds & Loose Debris

Larger weeds, leaves and loose dirt are cleared by hand and brush first, so the pressure washing can work on the surface itself.

  3. Pressure Washing

The drive is cleaned section by section with pressure and a cleaning head suited to the material, lifting moss, algae and built-up traffic grime.

  4. Re-Sanding & Review

Block paving joints are refilled with kiln-dried sand. We rinse surrounding areas, then review the completed work with you and confirm everything has been done as agreed.

FAQs

Driveway Cleaning FAQs for Kents Hill

Do you cover Kents Hill?

Yes. Kents Hill in Buckinghamshire is one of the areas we cover from our base in Bedford, along with nearby Walton, Wavendon and Fenny Stratford. Call 01908 483107 with your postcode and we will arrange a time to look at the job.

Will cleaning wash out all the sand between my blocks?

Some joint sand comes out during any clean, which is why we re-sand afterwards with kiln-dried sand. The pressure is set to avoid stripping more than necessary.

Do you bring your own water?

We normally use your outside tap. If there is not one, or it is not working, mention it when you book so we can plan around it.

When can I park on the drive again?

Without a sealer, usually as soon as the re-sanding is brushed in. If a sealer is applied, vehicles need to stay off for the curing time we give you.

Is there a best time of year for this?

Dry, mild weather suits re-sanding and sealing best, as the sand needs to go into dry joints. Spring and late summer are popular, and we avoid frosty days.
