Banks Behind New Wixams Homes

Wixams has been built in phases, and the land was shaped to suit roads, drainage and rows of new homes. The result is that some gardens finish at a bank, some sit lower than the plot behind and some have a slope the developer simply grassed over. These banks often look tidy at handover, but they are hard to use and can slowly shed soil onto the lawn or patio.

A garden retaining wall lets you square off that bank and gain usable space. It can hold a raised strip along the back fence, level out a sideways tilt, or create a flat area for a shed or garden office. Because Wixams plots are often compact, even a short length of wall can make a noticeable difference.

New-build gardens bring a few things to check before any digging:

  • Where your boundary actually runs, as fences are not always on the line.
  • Whether the bank holds up a neighbour's garden or a shared path.
  • Any covenants or estate rules in your deeds about walls and structures.
  • Drains, cables or soakaways that may run close to the bank.

Ground on new estates can be a mix of original soil and imported fill, which settles at different rates. That makes a properly dug footing and good retaining wall drainage more important, not less. Water from roofs and paths often runs towards the lowest point, which is usually exactly where the bank meets the lawn.

Even young walls can show early warning signs. Look for gaps opening at the joints, a top course that is no longer straight, or damp staining spreading across the face. These are cheaper to deal with in the first few years than once the wall has moved further.

When to Call Us

When You Need a Retaining Wall

These are the situations that most often lead people to get in touch about this work, and what each one usually means.

  • A Garden on a Slope

If your lawn runs uphill or downhill from the house, a retaining wall lets you create flat terraces that are easier to use and plant.

  • Soil Spilling Onto Paving

Borders that spill mud onto paving every time it rains are a sign the soil needs holding back. A low wall keeps the beds in place and the patio clean.

  • An Old Wall Leaning

Brick walls that bulge, crack or lean, and sleepers that have softened and split, are worth replacing before they give way and drop soil across the garden.

  • Room for a Level Patio

Cutting into a bank to make space for a patio or seating area usually needs a wall to support the ground left behind, and we can build both together.

Wall Options for Wixams Gardens

Most Wixams houses are modern brick, sometimes with render or boarding, so a brick retaining wall in a matching or complementary brick usually looks part of the house. A rendered block wall gives a clean, contemporary line that suits newer designs. A sleeper retaining wall works well for low banks in a relaxed, family garden, as long as you are happy to replace it in future years.

In a small garden, every centimetre counts, so we often suggest a slim, well built wall over a deep sloping bank. A low wall around a raised bed lets you grow your own plants at a comfortable height, and a wall at seat height along a patio edge gives you extra seating without extra furniture. If a level change needs crossing, steps can be built into the wall, and our page on paths and steps in Wixams shows how we keep them practical.

A raised strip along the back fence can also solve the storage problem many new homes have. A short level platform held by a low wall gives a firm, dry base for bins, a bike store or a small shed, off the lawn and out of the way. If there is an inspection chamber or manhole in the bank, we build around it so it stays accessible, raising the cover to the new level where needed.

The cost of a retaining wall in Wixams depends on its height, length and finish, how much soil needs removing from the bank, access through a side gate or the house, and whether drains or fences need working around. We look at all of this on site and put it in a free written quote.

Some walls on new estates need more careful design. If the bank holds up a neighbour's garden, a footpath, your driveway or ground close to the house, or if the wall will be tall, a structural engineer may need to design it. Walls by a road or above certain heights may need permission from Bedford Borough Council, and some Wixams addresses fall under Central Bedfordshire Council, so check which applies to you. We will say clearly if your wall needs that extra step.

How It Works

How a Retaining Wall Is Built

  1. Survey & Design

We look at the height of ground to be held, how water drains across the plot and how you want to use the space, then agree the line, height and material.

  2. Excavation & Footings

The ground is cut back to the agreed line and a solid footing is set for the wall to sit on, which keeps it stable as the soil behind settles.

  3. Building the Wall

The wall is built course by course in brick, block or stone, or sleepers are fixed in place, with drainage and free draining backfill placed behind as it rises.

  4. Backfill, Finish & Review

We finish the top, re-level the soil, clear away spoil and then review the completed work with you to confirm everything has been done as agreed.

FAQs

Retaining Walls FAQs for Wixams

Do you cover Wixams?

Yes. Wixams in Bedfordshire is one of the areas we cover from our base in Bedford, along with nearby Kempston, Wootton and Bedford. Call 01234 798910 with your postcode and we will arrange a time to look at the job.

The developer's bank is slipping onto our lawn. Do we rebuild it or just shore it up?

If soil is moving, a proper wall with a footing and drainage is usually the lasting fix. Temporary edging rarely holds a bank that is already moving. We look at how much the ground has shifted and suggest the simplest wall that will do the job.

The bank is right on the fence between us and next door. Can we still build a wall?

Usually, as long as the wall stays on your side and you agree the plan with your neighbour. If the bank supports their garden, it is even more important to talk first, and in some cases the work may need a party wall agreement.

We only have a narrow side gate. Can you still get materials in?

Yes. Most Wixams jobs are done with barrows and a small machine that fits through a standard gate. We plan deliveries so the drive is clear for you as much as possible and explain the timings at the visit.

Where does the soil from the bank go while you build?

We cut the bank back in sections, keep it supported while the footing goes in and stack spare soil on protected boards. What is not needed behind the finished wall is taken away.
