Tarmac Drives Among Mature Trees

Great Linford has an old village heart near the canal and the manor, surrounded by housing that has had time to mature. Many gardens now have well grown trees and hedges, and some homes back onto parkland or footpaths with long, narrow drives. The greenery is a big part of the appeal, but it brings two particular challenges for a tarmac drive: roots underneath and shade on top.

Roots can lift and crack tarmac, especially near shallow rooted species. Before quoting we look for raised ridges or cracks radiating from a trunk. Cutting large roots can harm or destabilise a tree, and some trees in the area may be protected, so the usual approach is to keep the dig shallow near the trunk, use a reinforced or geotextile layer, or route the drive slightly away. If a tree preservation order or conservation area applies, Milton Keynes City Council needs to be consulted before any root work.

Shade keeps a surface damp, which encourages moss and algae and makes tarmac slower to dry after rain. A good fall towards a drain or the lawn helps water clear quickly, and a dense surface course gives moss fewer places to cling.

The construction itself follows the same principles as anywhere else: dig out to firm ground, lay and compact stone, then binder and surface courses. If your current drive is sound apart from wear, a resurface may be possible, but root damage usually means at least part of it has to be rebuilt.

Kerbs along the edges prevent the tarmac crumbling into borders, which is common where soil is soft and damp under trees. On planning, front surfaces exceeding five square metres that are impermeable and flow toward the road generally need permission, while draining into planting usually does not; the council can advise on your specific case.

When to Call Us

When a Tarmac Driveway Makes Sense

These are the situations that most often lead people to get in touch about this work, and what each one usually means.

  • Old Concrete Has Cracked

A tired concrete or broken slab drive with wide cracks and trip edges can be dug out and replaced with a single, even tarmac surface.

  • Room for More Cars

Turning lawn or a front garden into extra parking is a common reason to call, and tarmac covers a large area at a sensible cost per square metre.

  • Gravel Keeps Migrating

Loose stones that end up on the pavement, in the house or in the lawn are a frequent frustration, and a bound tarmac surface stays where it is laid.

  • Water Pools After Rain

Puddles that sit on a drive for hours usually mean the falls were never set correctly, which a new surface with planned levels can put right.

Keeping a Shaded Drive Looking Good

Moss on tarmac is the main upkeep issue in a leafy road. Sweep away fallen leaves before they break down, as wet leaf litter is what feeds moss. A suitable moss treatment in spring and autumn, followed by brushing, keeps it under control. Avoid very high pressure washing, which can strip the fine surface stone.

Black tarmac shows debris less than lighter finishes, which helps under trees. Red tarmac can still work but may darken with organic staining over time. A neat border of block or granite setts frames the drive and gives a clean line to sweep along.

Factors in the tarmac driveway cost here include:

  • Hand digging or careful work near roots
  • Root barrier or geotextile layers
  • Extra drainage where the ground stays wet
  • Edging along planted borders
  • Removal of leaf soil and old material

Hot laid tarmac is our standard. It takes some time to set fully: you can usually walk on it the same day and drive on it the next, but in warm, sheltered conditions it may stay slightly soft for longer, so avoid sharp turns of the wheel at first.

If your drive runs close to a boundary hedge, we can leave a narrow strip of gravel or a mowing edge between tarmac and hedge so roots and trimmings are easier to manage.

Where the drive meets a lawn under trees, a slightly raised edge stops soil washing across the tarmac in heavy rain.

Is tarmac the right choice under trees? Often yes, because it is flexible enough to cope with a little movement and easy to patch. Resin and block paving can also work, and a permeable option may be kinder to roots by letting rain reach them. We will discuss which suits your drive and include it in the quote we leave with you.

How It Works

How a Tarmac Driveway Is Laid

  1. Survey & Levels

We measure the drive, check how water currently runs off, note any covers or services, and agree where the finished surface should sit against the house.

  2. Dig Out & Sub-Base

The existing surface is broken out and removed, then a stone sub-base is spread in layers and compacted so the drive has a firm, stable foundation.

  3. Edging & Drainage

Edging is set on a concrete haunch to hold the tarmac in place, and any channel drains or soakaway connections the layout needs are installed.

  4. Lay, Roll & Review

Tarmac is laid hot and rolled to the agreed falls. We clear the site, then review the completed work with you and confirm everything has been done as agreed.

FAQs

Tarmac Driveways FAQs for Great Linford

Do you cover Great Linford?

Yes. Great Linford in Buckinghamshire is one of the areas we cover from our base in Bedford, along with nearby Bradwell, Tongwell and Milton Keynes. Call 01908 483107 with your postcode and we will arrange a time to look at the job.

Will you need to cut back our tree before the work?

Not always. We note the canopy and roots at the visit. Trimming may help the drive dry out, but any work on a protected tree needs council consent first.

Can moss be stopped from coming back?

Not completely in shade, but regular sweeping and a seasonal treatment keep it manageable, and good falls help the surface dry.

Is there a risk of damaging the tree's roots?

We plan the depth and method to limit root disturbance and will tell you plainly if a design would put a tree at risk.

What happens to the old tarmac you remove?

It is taken away for recycling where possible, and we leave the site swept and tidy.
