Hard-Wearing Tarmac Driveways

Tarmac is a practical choice for a busy drive in Tongwell: it copes with daily traffic and is usually one of the more cost-effective surfaces to lay. We dig out, build the sub-base, lay and roll the tarmac and finish the edges with kerbs or blocks so it holds its shape.

Tarmac is hard-wearing, coping well with the weight of cars and vans, and it is cost-effective, usually costing less per square metre than block paving or resin. We lay a compacted stone sub-base, fit edging to stop spreading and set levels so water runs off to a drain or soakaway.

We lay tarmac driveways across Bedford, Kempston, Flitwick and Biggleswade, and over into Milton Keynes and Olney. The written quote is free and sets out the area, preparation and finish so you can compare it line by line.

When to Call Us

When a Tarmac Driveway Makes Sense

These are the situations that most often lead people to get in touch about this work, and what each one usually means.

  • Old Concrete Has Cracked

A tired concrete or broken slab drive with wide cracks and trip edges can be dug out and replaced with a single, even tarmac surface.

  • Room for More Cars

Turning lawn or a front garden into extra parking is a common reason to call, and tarmac covers a large area at a sensible cost per square metre.

  • Gravel Keeps Migrating

Loose stones that end up on the pavement, in the house or in the lawn are a frequent frustration, and a bound tarmac surface stays where it is laid.

  • Water Pools After Rain

Puddles that sit on a drive for hours usually mean the falls were never set correctly, which a new surface with planned levels can put right.

How It Works

How a Tarmac Driveway Is Laid

  1. Survey & Levels

We measure the drive, check how water currently runs off, note any covers or services, and agree where the finished surface should sit against the house.

  2. Dig Out & Sub-Base

The existing surface is broken out and removed, then a stone sub-base is spread in layers and compacted so the drive has a firm, stable foundation.

  3. Edging & Drainage

Edging is set on a concrete haunch to hold the tarmac in place, and any channel drains or soakaway connections the layout needs are installed.

  4. Lay, Roll & Review

Tarmac is laid hot and rolled to the agreed falls. We clear the site, then review the completed work with you and confirm everything has been done as agreed.

FAQs

Tarmac Driveways FAQs for Tongwell

Do you cover Tongwell?

Yes. Tongwell in Buckinghamshire is one of the areas we cover from our base in Bedford, along with nearby Milton Keynes, Wolverton and Cranfield. Call 0800 158 5642 with your postcode and we will arrange a time to look at the job.

How long does a tarmac driveway last?

A tarmac drive laid on a well compacted sub-base, with sound edging, typically lasts many years with little attention. The main things that shorten its life are a weak foundation, water sitting on or under the surface, and heavy point loads such as skip lorries or caravan jacks. Keeping the surface clear of weeds at the edges and dealing with any small cracks early helps it last longer.

How soon can I drive on new tarmac?

You can usually walk on tarmac the same day once it has cooled. For cars it is best to wait a few days, and longer in hot weather, because the surface stays slightly soft and can mark under turning tyres. We will give you guidance for your drive on the day it is finished, based on the weather and the time of year.

Do I need planning permission for a tarmac drive?

Standard tarmac is not permeable. Under general UK guidance, a non-permeable front garden surface over 5 square metres that drains onto the road usually needs planning permission, while one that drains into a border, lawn or soakaway on your own land usually does not. We plan the falls and drainage with this in mind and explain the options when we quote.

Can you lay tarmac over my existing drive?

Sometimes, but not often. Laying over an old surface only works if the base underneath is sound, level and at the right height against the house and damp course. In most cases the old drive is cracked or has moved, so digging it out and starting with a fresh sub-base gives a far more reliable result. We check this at the survey.

Is tarmac cheaper than block paving or resin?

For most drives, tarmac costs less per square metre than block paving or resin bound, mainly because it is quicker to lay. The ground preparation is similar for all three, so the difference is in the surface itself. If you would like to compare, we can price more than one option on the same visit so you can see the figures side by side.
