Block Paving Driveways in Bedford

Block paving lets a driveway in Shefford match the brick of the house or stand apart from it, with herringbone, basketweave or stretcher patterns and a contrasting border. We lay it on a compacted base with a sand bed and kiln-dried sand joints, edged so the blocks stay locked in place.

We dig out to the right depth, compact a sub-base, lay a sharp sand bed and set the blocks inside solid edge restraints. Kiln dried sand fills the joints so the blocks lock together. Individual blocks can be lifted and relaid if a section sinks or a pipe below needs attention.

Block paved driveways are laid from Bedford to Kempston, Biggleswade, Sandy and Milton Keynes. You receive a free quote in writing covering the pattern, edging and groundwork, with the figure based on the access and ground at your property.

When to Call Us

When Block Paving Is the Right Choice

These are the situations that most often lead people to get in touch about this work, and what each one usually means.

  • A Classic, Smart Finish

Homeowners who want a traditional look with crisp borders and a defined pattern often choose block paving to suit the style of the house.

  • Old Tarmac or Concrete

A cracked concrete slab or a worn tarmac drive is a common reason to switch to block paving, which gives a far more finished appearance.

  • Room for Another Car

Widening a drive to park a second or third car is a common reason to relay it, and block paving can be shaped to fit the space you have.

  • Access to Services Below

Where drains or cables run under the driveway, block paving makes sense because sections can be lifted and put back without obvious patches.

How It Works

How Block Paving Is Laid

  1. Picking Blocks & Pattern

We measure the area, check the levels and fall, and help you choose block colour, size and laying pattern, including any border or feature detail.

  2. Dig Out & Sub-Base

The existing surface is removed, the ground excavated, and a layer of aggregate is spread and compacted to form a stable foundation for the blocks.

  3. Edging & Block Laying

Edge restraints are set in place, a screeded sand bed is prepared, and the blocks are laid to pattern with neat cuts around every edge and cover.

  4. Jointing & Sign-Off

Kiln dried sand is brushed into the joints and the surface compacted. After clearing up, we review the completed work with you and confirm it is as agreed.

FAQs

Block Paving FAQs for Shefford

Do you cover Shefford?

Yes. Shefford in Bedfordshire is one of the areas we cover from our base in Bedford, along with nearby Biggleswade, Letchworth and Moggerhanger. Call 0800 158 5642 with your postcode and we will arrange a time to look at the job.

How long does block paving last?

Block paving laid on a well built, properly compacted sub-base can last for many years, and often decades with sensible care. The main things that shorten its life are a weak base, poor edging and joints left to wash out. Topping up the jointing sand and cleaning the surface now and then helps keep it in good condition.

Will weeds grow between the blocks?

Weeds can take hold over time when seeds land in the joints, especially in shaded or damp spots. Keeping the joints full of sand and brushing the driveway regularly helps a lot. If weeds or moss do build up, a deep clean and re-sanding brings the driveway back, and some owners choose a sealant afterwards to slow regrowth.

Is block paving permeable?

Standard block paving is not permeable, so rainwater runs off the surface and needs to drain somewhere suitable, such as a soakaway or your own garden. Permeable block paving with wider joints is also available and lets water pass through. We look at your driveway levels and explain the drainage options when we quote.

Can block paving be repaired if it sinks?

Yes, that is one of its main advantages. The affected blocks are lifted, the base underneath is made good and re-levelled, and the same blocks are relaid. Done carefully, the repair blends in with the rest of the driveway, which is much harder to achieve with tarmac or concrete.

Which pattern is strongest for a driveway?

Herringbone, particularly laid at 45 degrees, is generally considered the strongest pattern for driveways because the blocks interlock in several directions and resist movement from turning tyres. Other patterns still work well for lighter use, and we can explain the options alongside how they will look on your property.
