Fixing a Gravel Drive That Spreads
Some Bradwell homes already have a gravel drive, and the most common complaint is that it will not stay where it is meant to. Stones migrate onto the lawn and the pavement, tyre tracks form, and thin patches show the soil or membrane underneath. In most cases the gravel itself is fine. The problem is the layer below it, or the lack of any edge to hold it in.
Rather than replacing the whole drive with a different surface, it can often be rebuilt. We lift the existing stone, check what is underneath, and add or regrade the crushed stone base where it has sunk. A new membrane goes down, then gravel grids across the areas that carry the car. The cleaned original stone can sometimes be reused on top, topped up with new gravel so the colour stays even.
Where a drive is being created from scratch, perhaps by turning a front lawn into parking, the process is the same but the dig is deeper. We strip the turf and topsoil, which are no good under a drive, and build the base up from firm ground. That is the step most often skipped when gravel is laid cheaply, and it is why so many gravel drives fail early.
A gravel drive lets rain soak into the ground, so it sits comfortably within the usual front garden drainage rule. If you are adding a new access onto the road, the dropped kerb is a separate matter for Milton Keynes City Council, and we can explain how that tends to work when we visit.

When a Gravel Driveway Makes Sense
These are the situations that most often lead people to get in touch about this work, and what each one usually means.
A Drive on a Budget
Gravel can cover a generous area for less than most bound surfaces, which makes it a good fit when you need more parking without a large outlay.
Old Gravel Has Gone Thin
Bare patches, ruts and weeds pushing through usually mean the stone has spread or sunk into the ground, and the base needs rebuilding before topping up.
Surface Water Is a Concern
If your drive slopes towards the house or the road and you want to avoid adding drains, a free-draining gravel surface is often the simplest answer.
A Rural or Period Property
Many cottages, barn conversions and older homes suit the softer look of gravel better than modern block paving or a uniform black surface.

Making Bradwell Gravel Last
Choosing the best gravel for a driveway starts with the shape of the stone. Rounded stone looks soft but rolls like marbles under a tyre, which is often why an old drive has spread. Angular gravel of around 14 to 20mm has flat faces that bite against each other and holds a far firmer surface, especially when it sits in grids.
If you are reusing old stone, we look at how much is left and whether it is worth cleaning. Older gravel can be full of soil and broken pieces, and mixing it with new stone sometimes gives a blotchy finish. Where it is in poor condition, starting with fresh gravel is usually the tidier option and not a great deal more expensive.
- New edging where the old drive had none
- Grids to stop rutting at the parking and turning areas
- A compacted stone base topped up where it has sunk
- A firm strip at the pavement edge to stop stones spilling
The cost of reworking a gravel drive depends on how much of the base needs rebuilding, whether grids are added and whether the old stone can be kept. It is often noticeably less than switching to a fully bound surface, which is one reason many owners choose to put gravel right rather than replace it.
If after years of raking you would rather have no loose stone at all, resin bound or block paving are the usual alternatives. A properly built gravel base can sometimes form part of the foundation for them, so the work is not wasted if you change your mind later. We will be honest about which route makes sense for your drive.
Weeds are the other frequent worry with older gravel drives in Bradwell. Most weeds in gravel do not grow up from the soil at all; they germinate in dust and leaf litter that builds up between the stones. A fresh membrane helps with anything pushing up from below, and keeping the surface clear of debris does most of the rest. A quick rake through in spring and autumn is usually enough.
It is also worth thinking about how the drive meets the house. A narrow strip of paving or a border of bricks along the front wall keeps gravel from banking up against brickwork and makes it easier to step from the car to the door without carrying stones inside.

How a Gravel Driveway Is Built
Planning the Layout
We measure up, look at the slope and the entrance, discuss stone colours and sizes, and decide whether stabilising grids would help in your situation.
Excavation & Base
The old surface is dug out and taken away, then a stone base is laid and compacted to give the gravel a firm, even layer to sit on.
Edging, Membrane & Grids
Edging is set along the borders and the pavement line, a weed membrane goes down, and any grids are laid and clipped together across the area.
Gravel & Final Review
The gravel is spread and levelled to an even depth. After a tidy up, we review the completed work with you and confirm everything has been done as agreed.
